Leamington Spa Pub Grub

Overall, the standard of food in Leamington pubs is pretty high. Lots of pubs do food. The ones listed here are only those we have tried. If you've tried others, please send us a review.

During the week, the town centre pubs are all fighting for lunchtime trade so you can take your pick. The quality of food is generally very high and its rare you'll find anywhere crowded. Pubs that are packed on a Friday night are a lot emptier (and so with better service) at lunchtime.

Have to recommend the Thai Curry at Bar 44 it is one of the best if not the best currys I've had in a long time.

Went there with my girlfriend we both loved the food and are going back soon. The menu is great you'll have a hard time trying to choose anything because of the choice. Service is great very friendly. Also recommend popping into the cocktail bar for a nice refreshing drink.

All in all a great night out. Ten out of ten

An excellent range of food and, important to many, a non-smoking dining area.

The Hogshead is a good pub that features on many a Friday or Saturday night itinerary. The food it serves at lunchtimes is reasonable, though below the high standards of most of the other pubs reviewed. It makes up for this with its impressive ale selection (the best in town).

A meal (one course) costs between £4 an £8 with everything from sandwiches up to proper main courses. A fair amount of this has a "sent from head office and defrostef in the microwave" feel about it, but perfectly edible for all that. One unusual meal they serve is pancakes.

One of the more popular lunchtime pubs, the Hogshead gets busy at around 1pm; on a Friday its typcially packed out and getting a table can be tricky.

With a huge array of bars and restaurants it's easy to overlook the Jug and Jester for food and drink. But it has the most diverse mix of people and the friendliest atmosphere of any establishment in Leamington. It has the feel of a local without the locals.

The food is very good, if not gourmet, but then it doesn't set out to be. You can eat well with three courses for around £8 each. It is vegetarian friendly and a great place to eat or spend long drunken hours with friends, alone reading or watching sport. The beer garden is very atmospheric as it sits overlooked by the Church.

Inside it suffers a little bit from overdoing it's already heavy sense of history, but it's still much more fun to ring people from the rescued red phone box than from a mobile. It fortunately doesn't fall into the over-sentimentalisation of chain theme pubs. It has a good standard range of beers, with deals on four pint jugs and spirit doubles and you can buy cigarettes from behind the bar rather than be ripped off by a vending machine.

It lives up (or down) to every occasion and time of day or week. The only thing which upsets me occasionally are the pangs of jealousy at seeing students still supping full pints at 11.00 knowing I've got to get up for work in the morning. It is a wonderful pub. The Landlady tells me the Brewery want to change it into a Wine bar, though if enough people complain it'll stay the same.

All our main course items are only £3.00 the kitchen is small and everything is cooked to order, so we are not the fastest during busy periods, but most of our business is repeat business so we know the food is good. especially recommended is our cajun chicken.

If you want a really relaxed place to eat with fabulous food and great service then you can't beat the Newbold Bar and Brasserie. Everytime I've eaten there (and believe me thats quite a few times) the food has been cooked to perfection with great thought given to presentation as well as the taste. The menu is extensive with anything from snacks to steaks and all equally delicious. They also have a range of "specials" that change regularly as well.

The Brasserie upstairs is worth a visit for a treat but the food is so good downstairs that I would happily recommend either. The staff are friendly and always on hand to make sure you feel at home.

I don't normally have room for a dessert but if you do I totally recommend the chocolate brownie! Enjoy!

An updated menu includes curries, pizzas and 'typical' pub meals i.e. half a roast chicken, scampi & chips, lasagne etc. The new part of the menu is the "Oak Inn Steakhouse" - possibly the best steaks in Leamington at great prices: 9oz Rump = £3.95, 9oz Sirloin £4.50, 16oz Rump = £6.95, 16oz Sirloin = £7.95, 18 oz T-Bone = £7.95. There is a cosy non-smoking restaurant section that is separate to the main part of the lounge and the bar. Meals are served Mondays to Fridays from 12 to 2.30pm, and 5pm till 8pm and Saturdays 12 - 7pm.

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,
bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens,
brown paper packages tied up with strings,
MAY have been the favourite things of the past, but the Red Lion easily trumps them all.
Lovely garden, fantastic interior (loving the comic book covers), delectable food (farmers plate is a must on a hot sunny day - in the garden of course), and fun, easy going staff. These are a few of my favourite things, and I implore you to go try them.
Do it!!

pleasant looking pub, even if they still advertise world cup 2006 on their 'a'boards, not a promising sign, place not too bad inside but no real atmosphere, landlady sampling wines, staff not too friendly menu looked quite promising, food was 40 minutes between order and arrival @ table and to be quite frank, was delivered by a chap who looked like a refugee who had just won the lottery but couldn't find the ticket, the staff looked as tired as some of the decor, the food was to say the least dissappointing the platters were not, as promised sizzling but merely concept that had obviuosly on this occasion not been delivered, nice spot, shame they can't delive what's promised, never again
P.S. Macdonalds is at the bottom of the car park, at least they deliver what they promise so that may be a better bet.

Call 01926 887282 to book in advance. Food served daily 12 noon - 3pm.

Examples of menu items : Chicken burger with chunky chips £5.95; Sausage & Mash £4.95; Caesar Salad £4.50; Soup & baguette £2.95.

Good quality food at very reasonable prices. For example, a baguette with chips will set you back £3-4. The mixed grill is very good.
